The Process Isn’t Fun, And Like Most, I Was Concerned About Feeling Hungry (You Will), Being Nauseated (You May Be) And Having Diarrhea (It's Inevitable). The Good News Is That The Discomfort Is Temporary. Sure, Being Uncomfortable Stinks, But Cancer Stinks More. For What It’s Worth, Here’s My Advice...
- Read Over Your Doctor’s Instructions More Than Once. If Your Going To Do This, You Want To Do It Right!
- Arrange Your Schedule: I’m Glad I Worked The Day Before My Scheduled Appointment, It Kept My Mind Off Hunger. Once You Drink The Drink, You’ll Want To Be Home – And In Your Own Bathroom.
- Cut Back On Fiber A Couple Days Beforehand: Fiber Is The Indigestible Part Of Plant Foods And Leaves A High Amount Of Residue. Stick To A Low-Fiber Diet, And Avoid Foods Such As:
- Beans
- Nuts
- Raw Fruits And Vegetables
- Whole Grains
- Maintain A Liquid Diet The Day Before The Procedure: Water Gets Boring Pretty Quickly. Have A Few Other Options On Hand.
- Clear Broth
- Coffee Or Tea
- Italian Ice
- Jell-O
- Popsicles
- Around 6pm The Night Prior, Get Comfortable And Drink The Drink: It’s Gross. I Added Only Water, You May Want To Add Something With Flavor.
- You Could Add Liquid IV Or Crystal Light.
- Drink It Cold.
- Use A Straw (And I Hold your Nose).
- Suck On A Lemon Or Hard Candy Afterward.
- Prepare The Bathroom: Once The Prep Solution Starts Working, You’ll Want To Stay Close.
- Wear Loose Clothing.
- Stock Up On Soft Toilet Paper.
- Use Skin-Soothing Products Such As Baby Rash Ointment.
- Keep Entertainment Handy; You May Be There A While.
finally, remember that this screening could save your life. excluding skin cancers, colorectal cancer is the third most common cancer diagnosed in the united states, with more than 101,000 cases expected to be diagnosed in 2019. with a successful colonoscopy and a clean bill of health – meaning no polyps were found during your screening – you won't need another colonoscopy for 10 years. if your doctor does find and removes polyps, you'll likely need to get screened in five years. either way, you've done something remarkable for your health, so go celebrate with a generous slice of red velvet cake, some strawberry jam on a sesame seed bagel, or a cranberry juice cocktail. when i get over being annoyed, i will reschedule (possibly with a new doctor.
